Counselling
Our mental health professionals provide supportive counseling for individuals and families affected by police custody. We're here to help you navigate difficult times with compassion.
Counseling is a personalized process that requires empathy, patience, and expertise. The goal is to empower clients or trauma victims to regain control over their lives and foster resilience in the aftermath of trauma. Nikiea and Neveah Foundation will work with experienced trauma therapists and counsellors to ensure that we bring succor and peace to troubled minds.
Our responsibility will be to work to create a safe and supportive space where the client feels comfortable sharing their experiences. We understand, from prior contact and experience in the field, that oftentimes there is a palpable reluctance to open up and talk about traumatic pasts. People hold on to their trauma and find it hard to let go.
Developing a trusting relationship is crucial. Nikiea and Neveah Foundation therapists will spend initial sessions getting to know the client, their history, and family backgrounds, and understanding their needs. Often, we have come to the conclusion that in almost all cases, feeling overrides thinking. Feelings of being overwhelmed, flooded, unsettled, hyperalert, etc., are typical on the menu. These feelings are the culprits in most traumatic expressions. Our duty will be to identify the root causes of these emotive responses. This way, it will be a lot easier to declutter the mind of the individual involved.
Helping clients or their families understand that their reactions are normal responses to abnormal situations can alleviate feelings of isolation or shame. Since Nigeria ranks as one of the most traumatized nations in the world, our job is cut out and requires every sense of seriousness.
We believe that to reprogram the damage that traumatization caused in the nervous system, the individual needs to learn to stay in the present, to understand that their behavior and reactions are caused by the brain activity and that it's not their fault, that there are people they can trust, that there are ways to feel safe and reach stability, that they can learn to tolerate their emotional reactions before they try to repress them, that their fear is a primitive defense, and that they need to develop hope.
